Shumman was the artist for more than fifty surimono featuring flowers and (or) birds. Surimono means ‘printed thing’ in Japanese and it combines poetry with art. Seventeen examples of Shumman’s surimono artwork are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Shumman drew flowers and birds accurately enough for viewers to identify the species depicted but their shapes and colors were not always true to life.
